Ubuntu Software Centre 4.0 by DigitallyDestined Ubuntu Software Centre 4.0 by DigitallyDestined
The next version of the Ubuntu Software Centre (version 4.0) will have many new features such as rating applications and the ability for users to donate to their favouriite open source projects. I think that a new interface is also something that version 4 could do with. I know that every version of the Software Centre has had a new interface but all of them especially the latest one seem slightly bland and boring, something with more colour and visuals would be better in my opinion. This is what I have in mind, let me know what you think. The sizes of the the various categories depend on how many items are available under that category, for example the system category has 28151 items (on my system) making it the largest category and Universal Access has only 13 items making it the smallest category and this is reflected in my design. Made with GIMP & Inkscape as always. W'salaam ~ Peace

*NOTE* There is no menu bar because of the Global menu that will be introduced with Natty Narwhal (Ubuntu 11.04)

*NOTE 2* Improved mock-up [link]

Agreed with theradioboy .. the UI is in a total mess. Very crude and no professional touch. Thumbs Down

It would look a lot better (in my eyes) if the cells wold have a thicker black border (let's say 5px?)

It is most similar to the children's creativity. Not sure that this idea will be in later releases of Ubuntu. Cause this is not a serious concept, but only your whim.

It's a very good idea. The Software Centre does need a little more to it. There is however the issue of actually finding the category you're looking for; who's to say that System tools are going to be more popular for everyone than Educational? I do like it, a lot, but as long as there is still an option to have it listed a little less erratically :D

This is incredible. If the Software Center looked like this, I'd actually use it. Great work

Nice idea, but too messy. XD

Remember, beauty comes hand in hand with efficiency. Remember how clicking on one app you need to click on "details" to see more? How about a sliding banner at the top which automatically shows you the details and picture, and even the download, to the app you selected?

Keeping the selected items to minimum yet elegant would be the best bet. New users usually like clean and less complex stuff.

The colors really need to be less saturated :(

I really don't know about this, I am mostly satisfied with Maverick's USC GUI. (but not w/ it's speed >:| )

Colorful, but I think this design looks rather messy in my opinion.
Maybe giving different categories a size depending on number of packages is not so useful,
as the different sections are not equally important for everyone. Future increases in number of packages
in certain sections could alter the proportions in unexpected ways.

Also, how would the "updates available" messages be added to small-sized categories?
The point is that some readability issues can easily arise, and the control of proportions could
result in unnecessary complications...

Last but not least, there might be issues with this design for people with certain color deficiencies.

Very interesting ideas there. Really, the only thing that bugs me here is the different size boxes assigned to each type of software. It kind of makes it seem like some types are more important than others.

I think they should be a uniform size.

While the idea is somehow interesting, I find it too colorful and childish to a degree, a huge part of the problem is caused by the icons, and rest is caused by the strong gradients, the inconsistent colors and the large, unaligned paragraphs and titles. The last thing is, you have to choose between elementary and ambiance because you're mixing two styles there.

here it is, some constructive criticism. :)

I like it to some degree but it seems a bit crowded and loud

Also is the idea to have the sections grow dynamically based on new apps, updates and featured entries?

I think it makes a bit pointless if the box sizes are static

All in all a step in the right direction

Just read the picture info (need to do that ahead of time). So the sizes are dynamic but only based on the number of apps, hmmm

Colourful! but I don't like it for a number of reasons. However I think some of these ideas could be used... in fact....

I've decided that Ima going to make a mockup now!

Nice! Love the colors. However, in my very honest opinion, it's waaaaay too crowded. But still, nice mockup!

I can see what half-left is on about with that comment on the shadows but I doubt that unless being personally judgemental you can say the shadows are way to far from the text. It just gives them a far back feeling, for instance you put a light in the centre of a room then put your hand in front of it, depending on the position of the light you would be surprised at some of the places you shadow would land.

I may as well give you some feedback as I just seen this on OMG Ubuntu.

Shadows under the text are way too far from the text, a classic mistake and can my the text look ugly and harder to read.

Text overlaying icons like that or putting them it so close is a bad idea. It makes the text harder to read and and confusing.

Too many gradient shifts.

Too many saturated colours next to each other.

Pretty cool design indeed. It's important we think about the design now that OS X is getting App Store, which probably will have a nice design.

The Mac App Store just looks like a derivative of the iTunes store and App Store. I mean that's actually what it is... Being Inspired by the App Store anyway.
